New Jersey/New York Hazardous Materials Worker Training Center

Sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental and Health Sciences (NIEHS), US EPA and the US Department of Energy (US DOE)

The New Jersey/New York Hazardous Materials Worker Training Center was established in 1987 by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to provide comprehensive, quality health and safety training for the wide variety of employees potentially exposed to hazardous waste. Over 164,000 workers have received training through this center, which is also supported by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Since 1993, the center has received support from the US Department of Energy through NIEHS to conduct hazardous waste training for employees working at Department of Energyrelated sites. The Minority Worker Environmental Training Alliance was founded in 1995 to train minority youth in areas of life skills and environmental remediation.

The center has assembled an expert team of health and safety specialists, industrial hygienists, occupational physicians and trainers with extensive experience in waste site, industrial and emergency response operations.

A limited number of hazardous substance traineeships are available to public employees through the NIOSHsponsored Universities Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center (UOSHERC). Please contact the CET Registrar for further information.

OSHA encourages employers to participate in training programs that have been recognized by NIEHS through its training grants program. The center’s courses are partially supported by NIEHS through cooperative agreement numbers 2U45 ESO6179 and 2U45 ESO9762, as well as through NIOSH grant number T42/CCT210425.
